Making new friends and discovering PDHPE (Physical Development, Health and Physical Education) are clear highlights for many Year 7 students when asked what they are enjoying most about their first weeks of high school.

“I’m loving the school,” says Eva in 7 Ryan. “I have made lots of new friends and I like all the nice people around here. My favourite subject is PDHPE because you get to learn about your health and play sports with new friends.” Eva explains that forming friendships has felt natural. “Just by starting to talk to people in class and then inviting them to join me at recess or lunch is how I have met my new friends.”

Nandana from 7 Mercedes shares Eva’s enthusiasm for PDHPE. “I think it is because it is a good class to meet new people because we can play sports together”. She also says she has enjoyed meeting her new teachers and appreciates the independence of moving between classes and exploring the school.

Science has been a popular subject for some students.

PDHPE is not the only subject students are excited about, with Science and Visual Arts also proving popular. “I really like Science because my Science Teacher Mr Johnson is really, really funny,” says Charlotte from 7 Coolock. “Today we did an experiment where the white powder we mixed with a green liquid then turned pink!” She adds, “I really like everything though. All the classes are good, the teachers are nice and the canteen is pretty good too.”

Anvi says Visual Arts has been a standout because it allows her to express her creativity. She enjoys learning new techniques such as shading and toning and, although she finds them challenging, she is eager to keep developing her skills.

One shared challenge has been navigating the school and finding the correct classrooms which is something every student mentioned. “I found it quite hard in the first few days to find all my classes,” said Nandana. “However I asked some Year 9 and Year 11 students and they were really helpful by showing me to my classes and now it is OK.”

Despite the early navigation hurdles, the excitement of new friendships, supportive teachers and engaging classes is helping Year 7 students quickly feel at home.
