Situated on the land of the Burramatta people and founded by the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta, Catherine McAuley Westmead is a 7-12 Catholic girls’ school with a strong Mercy charism.

🎤 PUBLIC SPEAKING GRAND FINAL 🎤 Last Friday, Year 10 student Heidi S. and Year 7 student Olive D. represented the school at the Catholic Schools Debating Association Public Speaking Grand Final held at St Patrick’s College, Strathfield. Heidi placed an outstanding 1st overall in Year 10, while Olive achieved an impressive 5th place in Year 7. Congratulations to both students on this fantastic achievement. 👏🏅

ENVIRONMENT ACTION GROUP 🌏♻️The Student Environment Action Group met last week to begin planning some exciting initiatives for the year ahead. Students started preparations for Environment Week and continued working on a video for the International Day of Zero Waste. They also checked in on the progress of posters and crate labels featuring endangered animals, helping to raise awareness across the school. There were also discussions about inviting students to write articles on current environmental issues for McAuley’s Got News. A real example of students taking the lead and working together to promote sustainability in the school community! 👏🌱

THURSDAY SPORT 🤺 Students who have chosen fencing for their Thursday afternoon sport are continuing to sharpen their skills each week. Last week they stepped onto the piste for exciting one-on-one bouts, aiming to score points by touching their opponent with the tip of their weapon. A chance to practise their focus, strategy and quick reflexes!

NETBALL 🏐 The Catherine McAuley Senior Netball Team on Monday, 9th March competed in a Netball Gala and Selection Trial Day, enjoying a fantastic day of competition, teamwork and school spirit. The team performed exceptionally well throughout the pool rounds, finishing second in their pool and earning a well-deserved place in the semi-finals where they were defeated by the eventual winners of the day. They demonstrated great skill and determination, always playing their hardest and representing the school with smiles on their faces and within the true spirit of the game. The day was also an exciting opportunity for three younger players, who trialled for selection in the U15 age group. Congratulations to Jade G. for successfully progressing through to the second round of trials, a truly wonderful achievement. 🙌 Overall, it was a very successful day for Catherine McAuley netball, showcasing both the talent and positive team culture within the program. Well done to all students involved! 👏👏👏

YEAR 8 GEOGRAPHY 🌿 Year 8 Geography visited Manly Dam last week for a hands-on fieldwork experience linked to their Water in the World unit. Students became real-life geographers for the day, conducting turbidity and water quality tests to investigate the health of the dam. They also explored the area through bushwalking and fishing, while learning how human activities can impact waterways and local ecosystems. It was a fantastic opportunity to apply classroom learning in the real world while developing important fieldwork and critical thinking skills. 🌏💧

STUDENT LEADERS 💜 Catherine McAuley student leaders joined School Principal Ms M. Refalo and Leader of Learning Wellbeing Year 12 Ms J. Dae at the Sydney Hills Zonta Club International Women’s Day Breakfast last Friday. Held at Parramatta Leagues Club, the event brought together students from a number of local high schools to celebrate and reflect on the achievements of women. Students were inspired by guest speaker Dr Eliza Middleton, a STEM superstar who shared her experiences and insights. School Captains Talia and Lara also delivered a speech, and all Catherine McAuley leaders represented the school with great pride.

ART EXCURSION TO COCKATOO ISLAND 🎨 📸 Year 9 Visual Arts and Year 11 Photography students last Thursday spent the day exploring Cockatoo Island, capturing inspiration through sketching and photography. From historic docks and cranes to sweeping harbour views, the island’s industrial architecture and landscapes provided plenty of creative ideas. Students sketched en plein air, experimented with charcoal, and photographed the unique surroundings to use as inspiration for future artworks. It was a fun, hands-on day of creativity, observation and artistic exploration.

PUBLIC SPEAKING 🗣️ Congratulations to the five Catherine McAuley students who proudly represented the school at last Friday’s CSDA (Catholic Schools Debating Association) Public Speaking Competition. A total of 24 schools competed in the Preliminary Finals held at Rosebank College, Five Dock. Catherine McAuley has two students who have progressed to the Grand Final, which will take place this Friday at 5.30pm, St Patrick’s College, Strathfield - Olive D., Year 7 and Heidi S., Year 10. Wishing Olive and Heidi the very best of luck! 👏 👏 👏
