A Year 12 Visual Arts student has had her Body Of Work selected for ARTEXPRESS.
Year 12 Visual Arts student Jessica K. has been selected for ARTEXPRESS, the showcase of HSC Visual Arts works, for her series of three black and white drawings titled ‘Reflection’.
ARTEXPRESS is a presentation of the outstanding bodies of work by HSC Visual Arts students in NSW and it is an incredible achievement to have your artwork selected to appear in the final showcase. ARTEXPRESS will exhibit at galleries across NSW from February 2026.
Jessica says her Body Of Work, ‘Reflection’ portrays a reflection of how our insecurities torment us, feeling uncomfortable in our own skin, “Our insecurities play a large role as a guideline of how we view ourselves, to the point where we lose a sense of ourselves, leading to a distortion of our humanity,” Jessica said.
‘Reflections’ shows a series of three portraits in a distorted surrealist style. “The surrealism style and distortion effect help to achieve a deep, chilling artwork for my audience to evoke deep emotions, where they feel physiologically confronted and disturbed by what they see.”
“The absence of colour builds an overwhelming atmosphere to create tension within my piece, as the audience continues to stare at my artwork, they are confronted with a disturbing reflection, unable to forget the horror of the reflection. In the end, we’ll continue to feel uncomfortable with ourselves, as our insecurities haunt us whenever we look into the mirror and see our reflection.”
ARTEXPRESS is a joint partnership between the NSW Department of Education and the NSW Education Standards Authority. Jessica’s Body Of Work will be on show at the Hazelhurst Arts Centre, 782 Kingsway, Gymea.

Catherine McAuley Westmead has won the STEM in Sustainability Award at the 2025 STEM MAD National Showcase! 🌱💡 The Year 9 team, Team Cup Crunchers, represented the Parramatta Diocese with their incredible invention - a biodegradable, edible cup designed to support people in distress by providing both a drinking vessel and a nutritious food source. Held in Adelaide on 17th and 18th November, the event brought together over 100 schools, celebrating innovation, collaboration and purposeful design. Ms T. Hartman, Teacher Librarian and Ms L. Nagawkar, STEM Mentor, said that the students proudly represented the school at this event. “Their effort, creativity and professionalism throughout the STEM MAD journey reflected the values of the school community and highlighted the powerful impact young people can make when they design with purpose.” Congratulations to Raylene, Kinjal, Kayla and Manasvi ! 👏 👏 👏

SENIOR JAZZ ENSEMBLE 💃 💃 Fresh off their first-place win at the Arts Factor Dance Eisteddfod, the Senior Jazz Ensemble took the stage once again - this time at the Diocesan Captivate Dance Festival! Held last Wednesday, the festival featured only the top performances from schools across the Diocese, and the McAuley senior jazz dancers shone among the best. PDSSSC Junior Touch Football 🏉 Last Thursday, the Junior touch football team took to the field at Kingsway for their grand final against Gilroy, as they came away with second place overall, whilst the Intermediate team wrapped up the day in 4th place overall. A huge effort from both teams! 💪👏

BASKETBALL RUNNERS UP 🏀 Well done to the Intermediate Basketball Team who were the runners up in the PDSSSC Basketball Competition for 2025! The grand final was played on Thursday against Caroline Chisholm College with Catherine McAuley losing 36-34. Coach Mrs Howlett said it was a great day and the team played well. Well done also to the Junior Touch Football Team who also made the grand final and were runners up.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLY 🔹 A full agenda at the school assembly yesterday as Catherine McAuley students continue to ‘strive for higher things’ in all aspects of their lives. The Year 10 Commerce students who took part recently in the Macquarie University Bubble Tea Innovation Challenge were recognised. One team placed 2nd and another team placed 4th! The McAuley Cricket Teams were applauded for their 1st and 2nd place in this year’s PDSSSC Cricket Competition! The students taking part in the University of Sydney Khuda Women in STEM Program spoke about the program and why they were so keen to take part. Congratulations to all students selected for this incredible new initiative promoting STEM career pathways for women in Western Sydney. Mathematics students who competed in the Australian Mathematics Competition were acknowledged and certificates given out to the high achievers. And finally a new initiative from students designed to replace the student Instagram page - ‘McAuley’s Got News (a student magazine), was launched. ACADEMY U AT WSU 🎓 Year 9 students, Ella C., Jessica C., Jillian D., Riya F., Lauren G., Lilly G., Ciara R., Sienna R., Mirabelle Y. and Hani Z. attended their first Academy U experience at Western Sydney University, Parramatta South campus. The students were challenged in many different ways, made new connections and learnt about two different fields of study. In the end they were more informed about what universities have to offer and more comfortable with the idea of attending university themselves. The Academy U program provides an opportunity for invited students to participate in university subjects whilst still at school.

CSPD students chase national glory after NSW All Schools success
Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) students delivered outstanding performances at the recent NSW All Schools Athletics Championships. The event showcased the next generation of young athletes, with several CSPD students achieving top honours in both track and field. They now aim to carry that momentum into the Australian All Schools Athletics Champions in Melbourne this December.

AFL 🏉 Yesterday Catherine McAuley had two teams represent the school at the PDSSSC AFL Gala Day held at Jamison Park, South Penrith. Both the Intermediate Team (pictured) and the Junior Team came 2nd in their respective competitions. Well done to Emma F., Year 10 who won the highest jump overall in the Intermediate competition and Alexis A., Year 8 who won the highest jump overall in the Juniors.
