The Student Leaders of Social Justice launched this year’s ‘The Big Give’ initiative in support of the Parramatta Women’s Shelter at the school assembly this month.

Catherine McAuley will be collecting donations to support women and children at the Parramatta Women’s Shelter through ‘The Big Give’ which will run from 20th May through to 8th June 2026.

“When we hear the word homelessness, many of us imagine people sleeping on the streets, but the reality is often far less visible,” Student Leaders Luanda L-C. and Suzanna F. told the assembly. “For many women, homelessness means sleeping in cars, moving from couch to couch, and trying to create a sense of safety and stability for their children while living in constant uncertainty. It is the quiet crisis of not knowing where you will sleep tomorrow, or whether you will be safe.”

“The Parramatta Women's Shelter exists to provide safety and hope. They offer emergency accommodation, food, and support for women during some of the most difficult periods of their lives. Yet beyond these practical necessities, they provide something equally significant: compassion and the reminder that no one should have to face hardship alone.”

Students and staff at Catherine McAuley will be helping support local women and children in need by donating essential household and cleaning items as part of The Big Give campaign. Items such as large garbage bags, bleach, spray and wipe and Chux wipes or similar will all be welcomed. Essential pantry items including vegetable oil, cling wrap, cereal, rice, pasta sauce, long life milk, juice, tea and coffee are also being collected.

“As a Mercy school, the value of justice calls us not simply to recognise inequality, but to respond to it with empathy, courage, and action,” said Luanda and Suzanna. “Justice means standing in solidarity with those who are vulnerable and using our voice, our resources, and our community to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. This mission closely connects to the work of Catherine McAuley, who dedicated her life to supporting women and children living through similar circumstances in Dublin 200 years ago.”

The Leaders of Social Justice joined with Miss R. Reynolds, Faith in Action Coordinator, to encourage everyone to donate items if they can and to continue to raise awareness about homelessness because every person deserves the fundamental human right to safety and a place to call home.
