The Catherine McAuley rugby league team.
For the first time Catherine McAuley has entered the PDSSSC rugby league competition with the school’s first ever school team.
Catherine McAuley now has a rugby league team! In the past the school has had students represent the school in rugby league but the school has never had its own team for the Thursday afternoon PDSSSC competition.
“It is a significant event that we now have a Catherine McAuley Westmead rugby league team this year,” said School Principal Ms Mary Refalo. “Women’s rugby league is a growing and competitive sport and we are confident that our team will do really well in the competition. We look forward to watching how well they do.”
The students have written the below report:
Our school made history last fortnight by playing our first ever rugby league game in the PDSSSC competition at Whalan Reserve. In the past, our school has had girls represent the Diocese in rugby league, but this year we are thrilled to have our own school team!
We have always been passionate about rugby league however we needed a coach to guide us through our first season. That’s where Ms Ticchio came in! We’re so grateful for all the time and effort Ms Ticchio has put into coaching us. We also have the support of three of our senior students, Kenzie M., Elissa L., and Sarah F., who are experienced rugby league players. They have been amazing mentors and have helped us all improve our skills.
We have a number of players who have never played rugby league before and we are so proud of the courage and determination these girls have shown by stepping out of their comfort zone and trying something new. They have learnt so much, like communication and ball work, and are having a blast doing it.
We are currently placed 2nd on the ladder and hope to keep this form up throughout the season. Rugby league is becoming increasingly popular for women and we highly recommend anyone interested in the sport to join our future teams. It’s a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, and show off your talents. Plus, it’s a fantastic opportunity for McAuley girls to shine in all areas.
