Visual Arts students from Years 9 and 10 visited the Art Gallery of NSW this week.

On Monday, 28th July, four classes of Years 9 and 10 Visual Arts students received the incredible opportunity to immerse themselves in the 2025 Archibald, Wynne and Sulman artworks at the Art Gallery of NSW. This unique exhibition offered experiences such as a close up viewing of a variety of portraiture, still life and abstract artworks beside the coordinating artist statement, offering an inside into the varied perspectives and concepts behind many of the contemporary artworks.

Year 9 students also drew inspiration from the originality of innovative modernist Australian female artists such as Margaret Preston, recognised for her appropriated artworks of still life, who herself, was inspired by her travels, heritage and native flora. This experience has solidified their current printmaking lino endeavours.

Meanwhile, the Year 10 students were looking closely at portraiture and self expression, recreating a portrait with their own setting and props. Abstraction and painterly techniques, also featuring later in the year, was well received in the Gallery.

Thank you to the Visual Arts teachers and support staff for providing us with this memorable opportunity.

“It was very interesting and fun to see all the different varieties of paintings, especially old pieces and works, as well as being able to observe the Archibald winner for 2025 up close. It was fascinating to observe how art has changed and developed over time.” Calista, Ava and Eunice, Year 9 students

“We enjoyed viewing the amazing artworks of Australian artists - especially Margaret Preston. Viewing the Archibald winners was the highlight of the day.”
