Students engaged in global issues through debate and diplomacy at the Model UN Conference.

On Saturday, 28th March, a group of students from Year 10 Global Connections and Years 11 and 12 Legal Studies participated in the Model United Nations (UN) Conference hosted by OLMC.

Students took on the role of delegates representing UN member states including Germany, Malaysia, Nepal, Norway, the Dominican Republic and Liechtenstein. As delegates, they wrote and debated amendments, and voted on resolutions that would impact all countries, while collaborating with students from a range of Sydney schools.

The experience strongly connected to their studies, linking to ‘Political Geography’ in Year 10 Global Connections and the ‘World Order’ topic in Legal Studies. Throughout the day, students worked alongside peers from MLC, OLMC, PLC and Marist, building both their knowledge and confidence.

Student Reflection:

Model UN gave us insight into the roles and responsibilities of the United Nations. It was a great opportunity to learn about the UN Security Council and General Assembly. Throughout the day, we formed new friendships with fellow delegates and learnt how to create amendments for resolutions and engage in ‘points of information’.

We were extremely fortunate to attend the Model UN hosted by OLMC. Participating in this debating experience pushed us out of our comfort zones, as we justified our opinions and responded to points of information, while collaborating with other delegates to support amendments and negotiations.

Model UN was an unforgettable experience. It allowed us to develop stronger communication skills, build friendships with other delegates, and participate in structured debates on real-world issues. We formed country alliances and exchanged ideas, giving us a deeper appreciation of global cooperation. This experience strongly connected to what we have studied in Political Geography.
