Construction industry representatives with Year 10 students
Students at Catherine McAuley explore career opportunities within the construction industry
Year 10 and interested Year 11 students recently had the opportunity to learn more about a range of careers in the construction industry through an engaging session delivered by a team of professionals from KANE Constructions, the construction company currently undertaking work on the Westmead Catholic Community site. The team demonstrated that women have a strong and growing presence in the industry challenging traditional gender stereotypes.
At the start of the session, students were asked to stand if they knew a family member or friend working in construction. They were then asked to remain standing if that person was female. Unsurprisingly, only a handful of students remained standing. This simple but powerful activity highlighted the low representation of women in the construction industry, which has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated field. Currently, women make up only 12% of the construction workforce which is much lower than in many other industries.
This lack of visibility can make it difficult for young women to see themselves pursuing a career in construction. With that in mind, students were encouraged to view the session with an open mind and “not be limited by what they can see”.
The representatives from KANE Constructions shared their personal journeys, highlighting the diverse and rewarding roles available - from site work to office-based jobs and even jobs with flexible work-from-home arrangements, from trades to engineers to site managers and more. They challenged outdated perceptions and showcased the success and satisfaction that women are finding in the industry today.
By the end of the session, students left not only better informed but also genuinely inspired about the possibilities a career in construction could offer them in the future.
'Thank you to the staff from KANE Constructions for taking time out of their busy schedules to present this session to our students.'
