Alyssa was presented with her certificate of achievement on behalf of the Lions Club by School Principal Ms Refalo at the school assembly on Wednesday 29th November
Congratulations to Alyssa A., School Captain and Year 11 student, who on Sunday, 19th November represented Catherine McAuley at the Lions Youth of the Year Club Final at the Crestwood Lions Club.
Alyssa successfully won the Club Final and now moves onto the Area Final to be held in March next year.
This competition consisted of two parts - an interview for 40 minutes with Club members asking Alyssa questions based on initiatives taken at school, school academic achievement and general knowledge and following this a public speaking component. Alyssa was required to deliver a prepared speech and answer two impromptu questions.
In her prepared speech Alyssa spoke about the importance of letting our mind go quiet. “We live in a society where our greatest fear among all is the silence of our own mind. When we let our mind go quiet, our thoughts to dissolve, our phone to switch off, and the echo of other people's voices in our heads to cease, what’s left? That’s what we are afraid of”, Alyssa said.
Alyssa suggested in her speech that quieting our mind is what allows us to tune in to our inner wisdom and intuition. “Just as sunshine and water nurtures a flower and allows it to blossom, our inner silence is what ignites the emergence of profound insights and discoveries”.
Following her speech at Crestwood Lions Club the members said they were very impressed with Alyssa and that she is an asset to the school.

Three Catherine McAuley students, who are considering a career in the fashion industry, recently attended a two day workshop on sustainable fashion design at TAFE NSW. ๐ชก๐ The students had the opportunity to explore fashion design through the lens of sustainability and circular strategies. Angela C, Year 11, who attended the workshop said that, โthe main objective of the course was to create a textile bag out of old denim jeans so that it becomes sustainable and reusable. We also listened to a talk with one of the employees from the Australian clothing brand Zimmermann. Everyone who attended is now seriously considering a career in this industryโ.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON AT McAULEY ๐ Year 9 students were busy playing sport on the school site (Newcombe Ball, Matball and Recreational Games) whilst keen soccer students were trying out for one of the Catherine McAuley soccer teams whilst Year 7 students were working with their Year 10 Peer Mentors as they look at building their resilience and finally Year 11 VET Hospitality were making Vietnamese rice paper rolls. Year 7 students came together in their Homerooms this morning to create a canvas wall hanging which will hang in their Homeroom. ๐ฅฐ ๐ฅฐ Each artwork will feature a fingerprint from every student in that Homeroom as a reminder of their unity and strength together as a community. The artworks should be completed by next week.

Well done to the students who represented Catherine McAuley at last weekโs PDSSSC Cross Country event. Despite the muddy grounds at the Sydney Equestrian Centre, Horsley Park, all students competed commendably. Scarlett L. Year 7 even lost her shoe mid-race but continued running with just one shoe and ended up equal 5th! ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ Three Catherine McAuley students made it into the top 10 and will be representing PDSSSC at the NSWCCC Cross Country on 5th June. Congratulations to Niamh M. Year 11, who came 2nd and Neave S. Year 11 and Scarlett L. Year 7 who came equal 5th.

Around the Classrooms โก๏ธ Is the Force With You? ๐ฝ Year 7 Science students of Miss Raja have recently started a new unit called โIs The Force With You?โ As part of this the students have been learning about different types of forces. In class last Friday the students modelled crash test dummies and described their motion in different types of collisions. The students explained their observations with reference to inertia, which is the tendency of an object to resist change in motion and is something we experience everyday in a car, bus or train. Through this, students reinforced the importance of wearing seat belts in moving vehicles to slow down with the vehicle and prevent passengers from continuing their forward motion due to inertia.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS ๐ ๐ Well done to both Annisha R. and Clara F. who represented NSW at the Australian Little Athletics Championships held in South Australia during the school holidays. Annisha came 1st in Australia in the U/14 Discus with a personal best throw of 40.59m. This was also a record for the meet. Congratulations Annisha and Clara on your achievements in athletics!
