Year 9 WSU Academy U students had their first experience of university at an ‘Innovation and Investigation Day’ held on Tuesday, 31st October.

Last week on Tuesday, 31st October a group of Year 9 students who are part of the WSU (Western Sydney University) Academy U program had their first experience of university as they participated in an ‘Innovation and Investigation Day’.

Their task was to explore pathways in two of the following fields: Teaching and Education, Engineering and Laser Cutting, Health and Physical Education or Music and Creative Industries.

The Catherine McAuley students were placed into groups with students from other schools and challenged to create a research article, a 90 second future directions presentation and a short video journal in under three hours. Our students were able to collaborate with new team members, effectively communicate and meet a time deadline to deliver the tasks at hand.

Sandrina R., Year 9 said she was grateful to be given the opportunity to participate in Academy U.

“It's a program which exposes students to new study and career pathways that they may not have previously considered, while also preparing them for a successful transition to university. I attended two sessions during our on-campus day at Kingswood Western Sydney University - one focused on engineering and construction, and the other on health and physical education.

Both were very interesting and we discovered that there are numerous career options in these fields. We also discovered that every profession requires a set of abilities, including problem-solving, teamwork, communication, active listening, planning and organising, and self-management”.

“I'm thrilled to be able to learn about uni life and the real world through this programme whilst a high school student."
