Year 9 French students attended the French Film Festival on Thursday, 6th March 2025.
The Year 9 French class had a day filled with French language last Thursday, 6th March as they attended the French Film Festival at Palace Norton Street Cinema.
Two of the Year 9 French students have written a report below:
We had the opportunity to watch the French film ‘Tous Toques!’, translated to ‘All Stirred Up!’, which is a French Canadian comedy about a young girl entering a culinary cooking competition, without a clue of cooking! The film depicts the journey and struggles of the young girl and those who support her in overcoming the obstacles and hardships in ultimately achieving her goal. It was a wonderful excursion experience for the students as the film was both inspiring and educational, providing a deep understanding of the French language and culture.

The movie offered a fascinating look at the rigorous and competitive environment where young chefs work tirelessly to perfect their craft. It followed the characters through the highs and lows of their culinary journeys, highlighting the pressure to master complex techniques, impress demanding chefs, and find their place in the cutthroat world of haute cuisine. The film showcased how much sacrifice and discipline are involved in becoming a top chef, with the characters often facing personal challenges, overcoming failures, and pushing their limits to stay ahead. The film reminded us that while success in such a demanding field requires immense effort, it’s the passion for the craft that makes the journey worthwhile.

PARRAMATTA WOMEN’S SHELTER 🍓 Year 8 Veritas organised a chocolate coated strawberries stall on Tuesday this week as a fundraiser for the Parramatta Women’s Shelter. LIP SYNC BATTLE 🎶 The heats for the Catherine McAuley Lip Sync Battle have begun and yesterday it was acts from Years 9 and 10 and on Friday it will be acts from Year 7. Students made a donation to Parramatta Women’s Shelter to watch the performances. The final of the Lip Sync Battle will take place later this term.

CAREERS 🧐 Year 12 students recently attended the 2025 St Paul’s Catholic College Careers Expo, gaining valuable insight into a wide range of post-school pathways. Students were allocated one-hour to explore universities, private colleges, TAFE, other training providers and industry representatives helping students make informed decisions about their futures.

PARRAMATTA WOMEN'S SHELTER 💜 Last Friday night over 70 Catherine McAuley senior students gave up their beds to sleep out at school as a fundraising and awareness activity to support the Parramatta Women’s Shelter. The Sleepout was designed to raise awareness to the plight of women, who as a result of domestic violence, find themselves homeless. Students donated $40 to take part in the Sleepout and were able to bring an additional $3 in coins to contribute to their group purchased dinner from the nearby Coles. Time was spent during the evening listening to an insightful presentation from the Student Assistant Leaders of both Social Justice and Liturgy on homelessness in Australia and how it can particularly affect women. Following this the students slept in the open area of the Sister Barbara McDonough Building.

Students were encouraged to explore non-traditional career pathways in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Construction (STEMC) at the Transport for NSW STEMC Careers Day held last week. Ten students from Years 9 and 11 attended the event at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Wednesday, 11th June where they had the opportunity to interact with professionals working on major transport projects and explore hands-on exhibits featuring technologies like AI, drones and virtual reality.

Year 8 student Jenolin P. was today involved in filming a new promotional video for Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese. Filming took place at St Paul’s Catholic College and the video will be used for marketing purposes. Jenolin was a proud representative of Catherine McAuley Westmead and the school looks forward to seeing the completed video. Well done Jenolin!

PUSH UP CHALLENGE 💪 Many Catherine McAuley Homerooms and classes are taking part in ‘The Push Up Challenge’, Australia's largest mental health and fitness event. From 4th - 24th June the classes are completing a set number of push-ups with the goal of the school completing 3,214 push-ups in 23 days. This number represents the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2023 (the most recent available data). Year 7 Mercedes students of Miss S. Raja were busy this morning during Homeroom completing their push-ups. #pushupchallenge @pushforbetter

An AI STEM incursion was held this month to introduce students to the world of artificial intelligence. Ten Catherine McAuley students from Years 10 and 11 joined with students from Parramatta Marist for the incursion delivered by neuranext.ai. The session introduced students to the world of artificial intelligence through live, hands-on demonstrations including computer vision, face and object detection, autonomous vehicles and quadruped robotics. The students also explored generative AI tools and discussed the ethical implications of AI-generated content.
