Kaitlyn with Cumberland City Council Councillor Diane Coleman and Mayor Ola Hamed.

Congratulations to Year 7 student Kaitlyn R. who has been named as the Runner Up in the Cumberland Young Writers Award for her age group.

Kaitlyn wrote a beautiful poem about the breaking of a drought called ‘The Breaking’. Kaitlyn received a $75 Dymocks voucher and her poem has been published in a booklet distributed by the council at all their library branches.

Kaitlyn was presented with her certificate at the Cumberland City Council Young Writers Competition Awards Ceremony by the Mayor Ola Hamed and Councillor Diane Coleman.

Congratulations Kaitlyn!

The Breaking

I hear the gentle drum of rain,
Listen to the blissful sound of drops hitting my window pane,
I can hear the rain for the first time in years,
I've been saved by the harmony of Mother Nature's tears.

The fresh smell of rain is like an old friend,
We welcome it with open arms and never want the visit to end,
We breathe in the clean air the rain has gifted us again,
A nice break from the dusty air we were given when the drought began.

The cool water streaks down our cheeks,
We let it wet our skin as the sky leaks,
Rain drenches our hair making it drip in our eyes,
We allow ourselves to be soaked even though it's unwise.

My baby brother giggles and sticks his tongue out,
This is the first time he's seen rain as he was born during the drought,
He catches a fat raindrop and smiles,
His toothless grin can be seen for miles.

There's a low rumble of a truck,
Our fellow farmers have come to celebrate this luck,
They're wet from the rain too,
Grinning lips a pale shade of blue.

We huddle together on the steps of my home,
One might think we'd just won a trip to Rome,
We look like kids who have just gotten a new toy,
No one would have guessed such a simple thing as rain would make us jump for joy.
