Seven students have been chosen to design four new stained glass windows for the Mercy Chapel.

The students were chosen after submitting entries into the ‘Mercy Chapel Stained Glass Window Design Competition’ established by Ms Karin Smith.

Ms Smith is a Performing Arts and PDHPE Teacher who is currently taking part in the Mercy Formation Program. This program sees staff members from each of the five Mercy schools in Sydney choose a project to work on which will deepen the understanding of the Mercy charism at their school.

The chosen students came together on Thursday, 9th November to design the new windows which will be positioned either side of the altar. Their brief is that the windows should represent the six Mercy values of Justice, Excellence, Integrity, Courage, Hospitality and Mercy.

Ms Fernandes, Visual Arts Teacher, is mentoring the students in this project and ran an art workshop last week.

Ms Indira Fernandes, Visual Arts Teacher at the school for nearly 50 years (Ms Fernandes started in 1975) is mentoring the students in this project. Ms Fernandes is a practising artist herself and was involved in mentoring the Catherine McAuley and Parramatta Marist students who in the 1980s designed and produced the Morley Centre stained glass window.

Ms Smith, who instigated the project along with Ms Lowrencev who has now left the school, said the project objective is to make Mercy visible in the school. “We wanted to use the medium of art to express our school’s Mercy values.

The final designs will be transformed into stained glass windows in the Mercy Chapel, which given its location in Mercy Square, the heart of our school, draws our school community together and is therefore the perfect location for our project”.

The students will give their final design over for manufacture with the new windows expected to be installed next year.

The student design team consists of:

  • Celina K., Year 7
  • Irene M., Year 8
  • Victoria McC., Year 8
  • Beeon K., Year 9
  • Sarah D., Year 11
  • Matea N., Year 11
  • Sophia B., Year 11
