The winning McAuley Team at the recent Western Sydney University Academy U Hackathon event. Students shown with Mr Smyth from WSU.

Congratulations to the five Year 10 students who were presented with a certificate at the school assembly on Wednesday, 19th October for having one of the winning pitches at the recent Western Sydney University Academy U Hackathon event. Mr Ciaran Smyth from WSU presented the certificates to Shaleen M., Sophie K., Mikaela B., Amelia C. and Sara E.

The Academy U program at WSU provides an opportunity for invited students in Years 9, 10 and 11 to participate in university courses whilst still at school. The Hackathon event was held in August and was a fun competition with students working in teams to help solve a sustainable futures problem. The winning McAuley team pitched an idea centred around repurposing a number of existing community green spaces to improve accessibility for use by individuals with a disability or mobility issues.

Mr Smyth said that a professor involved with the program commented that the work the students produced was equal to the work he sees from second and third year university students. “This is amazing”, said Mr Smyth.
