Year 9 Visual Arts students explored the Art Gallery of NSW last week
On Thursday, 1st August 2024, Year 9 Visual Arts students visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales, in the heart of beautiful Sydney city.
The Art Gallery of NSW has two art museum buildings in the Domain overlooking Sydney Harbour on Gadigal Country. These have been given Sydney Aboriginal language names; Naala Nura, which means ‘seeing Country’, is the historic building on the south part of the site, and Naala Badu, which means ‘seeing waters’, is the brand new building on the north part of the site.
It was a jam-packed day as McAuley’s very own artists explored several exhibitions across both buildings. In Naala Nura (the south building) we appreciated the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2024 exhibition, as well as had a glimpse into the creative journey of much-admired, award-winning Australian artist Wendy Sharpe in her current exhibition Spellbound, which features a special space in the gallery that partially reconstructs her own Sydney studio.
After a spot of lunch in the Domain gardens, we ventured into Naala Badu (the north building), for a cultural experience in the Yiribana Gallery, immersed in the incredible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art collection. We also visited Emily Hunt’s exhibition The Grotto and interacted with some of the most intriguing works from the Art Gallery’s time-based art collection in What Does the Jukebox Dream Of?
It was a truly engaging and inspiring day that has fuelled our knowledge of artists, artworks and the world around us. We can’t wait to return to the gallery and we highly recommend you visit, too!
