Year 7 students spent the day at Dee Why Beach on Friday, 6th December for a surf safety excursion as part of their PDHPE course work.
The students have been learning about surf zones, how to identify safe and dangerous zones, identify rips and what to do if caught in one. The students were also shown basic survival skills and learnt how to paddle a foam surfboard and catch the waves back into shore.
Some of the Year 7 students have reflected on the day below:
“Our Dee Why Beach day was an unforgettable experience as we enjoyed many fun activities such as learning how to surf and safety floating positions in the pool. The day was jam packed with fun and we would say we all had the best day ever! As Australians we have wonderful beaches that can however turn deadly if we go to the beach without experience when it comes to swimming. On Friday we learnt dives such as dolphin dives and ways to run in the water to stop the waves slowing you down. The experience was one to remember as we all made so many great memories together while staying safe in the surf,”
Alice, Jayda and Demiana.
“The beach day was a fantastic day to learn new skills that we can use at the beach to stay safe,”
Misha
“Our day at Dee Why Beach was fun, interactive and an extremely sandy and wet experience! Learning to use the boards was a new experience for me and playing in the waves was half fun and half freaky. We learned many new techniques like the dolphin dive,”
Yuktha
“It was a fun experience which taught us the importance of water safety in an exciting way,”
