Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Students explore the outdoors at Somerset, Colo River.

Last week, a group of dedicated Year 9 and Year 10 students stepped out of their comfort zone and into the great outdoors, taking part in the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award Adventurous Journeys at Somerset, Colo River.

From Wednesday, 17th to Friday, 19th of September, 40 Year 9 students participated in their Bronze Award Adventurous Journey, a three-day, two-night expedition filled with physical activity, teamwork, and personal growth. Accompanied by Mr C. Foran and Mr J. Tan, students hiked through dense bushland, canoed along the Colo River, and engaged in various outdoor challenges designed to test their resilience, independence and collaboration.

The Bronze level marks the beginning of the Duke of Edinburgh journey, a globally recognised youth development program that encourages young people to engage in four key areas: volunteering, physical activity, skill development, and of course, an adventurous journey.

Meanwhile, earlier in the week, a group of 20 Year 10 students tackled their Silver Award Adventurous Journey - a four-day expedition that pushed them further in both challenge and achievement, guided by Miss C. Tran. Building on their Bronze experience, the Silver Award journey encouraged participants to further develop resilience, problem-solving and self-reliance.

Year 9 Student Kinjal K reflects on her experience:

Duke of Edinburgh was an amazing opportunity to branch out, face challenges, make new friends and learn the valuable lesson of persistence. It created chances for team bonding and encouraging each other. It allowed us to come out of our comfort zones and reach our potential.

Despite the physical and mental demands, the students embraced the experience with determination and high spirits - showcasing outstanding teamwork and leadership throughout the expedition. Well done to all the students involved and should be incredibly proud of their efforts.
